Smoothie Week: Blueberry Cacao

For day two of our smoothie week, we have a blueberry cacao smoothie.  This is my healthy version of a chocolate shake.

Cacao is raw chocolate powder, high in antioxidants, a good source of fiber, and known to be one of the highest dietary sources of magnesium, flavanols and polyphenols. You can substitute in carob or cocoa powder if you prefer – make sure you check the labels for allergens – Carob products are commonly made with highly allergenic ingredients, such as milk, nuts, peanuts, wheat and soy.

We made this with coconut milk but rice milk can definitely be used instead.  This recipe makes about 1 1/2 cups – two servings.

Blueberry Cacao Smoothie

1 cup coconut milk (coconut or soy – whatever suits your allergy)
1 cup blueberries
1 tablespoon protein powder
1 tablespoon agave nectar or raw honey
1 tablespoon cacao powder

Blend until smooth and enjoy!

Tomorrow we’ll make the kids’ favorite green smoothie.

    Where did you find a protein powder that is nut free, egg free and dairy free?

      Hi Kathy, The one we use is by Jarrow Formulas – its Ultra Smooth Brown Rice Protein, vanilla. Its free of sugar, wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish and its vegan! I get it from our tiny neighborhood health food store.
